Motherhood is a joyful period in every woman’s life, but this happiness is gained only after undergoing tremendous physical exertion during labour. The women become extremely debilitated physically & mentally, after the delivery & there are more incidences of various health ailments.
‘Sutika’ is the Ayurvedic terminology for the woman after childbirth. During this period which is called the Puerperium the pelvic organs revert to pre-pregnant state both anatomically and physiologically. During the Puerperium period the involution of the internal body structures to be happened properly and the debilitated body strength needs to come back, and proper nourishment needs to be achieved for the health of the mother as well as the child through healthy and adequate breast milk production.
“SutikaParicharya” / Prasavaraksha (or) Post Natal Care refers to the care taken to the delivered mother, the care of the baby as well. Post natal care is not the same for all women. It is a completely scientific approach considering various factors; as; the body type, digestive and metabolic activity of the body cells, the major associated difficulties the mother having, the mode of delivery etc. The proper care after considering all these factors will help in proper involution, nourishment of the body without weight gain, proper breast milk production and regain the strength of body as well as mind.
Proper Saturated nutrition for the newborn mother is equally important for regaining the strength of the mother as well as the feeding child’s health. ‘The national institutes of health’ has made few studies and given suggestions about the amount of protein, saturated fat, vitamins, fibers, sugar content after childbirth. Saturated diet is an inevitable factor in the infant’s growing also e.g.; – dietary lipids are important for an infant to meet their high energy needs, also, to fulfill numerous metabolic and physiological functions critical to their growth, development and health and, breast milk is a good source to meet the needs.

Abhyanga given to Sutika may be localized (abdomen or vagina) or to whole body with the help of Ghrita (medicated ghee) and Taila (medicated oils) especially with Bala Taila (Sida Cordifolia), Balaswagandha thaila, ksheerbalaetc. helps to strengthen the lower back, hip area, bones, muscles and ligaments. Abhyanga tones up the pelvic floor, abdominal, Back, muscle tissues and relieve the muscle Spasm. It also helps in recovery from soft tissue injury by increased circulation. Abhyanga at lower back helps for proper Drainage of lochia. Vaginal Abhyanga tones up Vagina and perineum, alleviates pain and heals vaginal and perineal wounds.
PARISHEKA/ MEDICATED HOT WATER BATH
Parisheka is pouring hot water in a stream preferably after applying selected oils based on DOSHIK preference. It is helpful in reducing the pain, stimulates the digestive fire, improves the skin texture and removes toxins from the body channels, so that abnormal blood clots accumulated in uterine cavity after the delivery of Garbha excreted properly and Vata Dosha also subsides. The various ingredients meet various purpose here; e.g. Vata Kaphaja predominant conditions – Leaves of Eranda (Ricinus communis), Arka (Calotropis procera) etc., Pittaja conditions – Nalpamara, Guduchi (Tinospora cordifolia) with Lukewarm water, for skin diseases – Nalpamara, Ixora etc. Selected and used.
UDARAVESHTANA (Abdomen bandaging)
It is the wrapping of the abdomen with a long cotton cloth tightly after bath to 6 hours. It provides support to the back & abdomen. It mainly helps the uterus to shrink back to its normal size. Also helps to straighten the back after pregnancy and improving the posture.
This is the application of medicated smoke over the vaginal region using drugs like Kusta (Saussurea lappa), Agaru (Aquilaria malaccensis), Guggulu(Commiphora mukul), which have the properties like prevention of microbial infections, reduces itching and swelling and it is helpful in healing the episiotomy wound. It will maintain the hygiene of the perineum.
Other than these, every mother will be getting special care for the hair, face, body weight management and emotional support from our AyurGem team.
For the baby: other than therapies for the mother the baby will be taken care by an experienced caretaker with herbal oil massaging, bathing, shaping of nose, ear and head in the traditional way.
DIET AND FOOD
One Sutikastree needs proper nutrition and it should be health promoting and healing,facilitating digestion, evacuating bowels, giving nourishment to tissues, and subsiding vitiated Vatadosha as well as facilitating the breast-milk production quantitatively and qualitatively.
Food includes various Ayurvedic porridges, selected vegetables, fruits, soups herbal drinks as well as oral medications to improve the health as well as mind. All of the food and drinks will be taken care of under the instructions of doctor.
